Light Up Night is the evening Pittsburgh flips the switch on the holiday season, and for 2026 there's a new way to see it: from the rivers. Our Light Up Night Sightseeing Cruise sails on Saturday, November 21, 2026, so your family can take in the glowing skyline without fighting downtown traffic, hunting for parking or squeezing through the crowds.
Here's what's happening downtown that night, why the river is such a good seat for it, and everything you need to plan the cruise.
What is Light Up Night 2026?
Highmark Light Up Night is Downtown Pittsburgh's annual kickoff to the holidays, and 2026 marks its 65th anniversary. This year it falls on Saturday, November 21, 2026, the Saturday before Thanksgiving.
According to the official schedules from the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership and VisitPITTSBURGH, the 2026 highlights include:
- 5:00 pm: City of Pittsburgh tree lighting with Zambelli rooftop fireworks at the City-County Building
- 6:30 pm: UPMC Ultimate Holiday Tree lighting at PPG Plaza
- 7:00 pm: Highmark Christmas Tree lighting with Zambelli rooftop fireworks at Penn Avenue and Stanwix Street
- 8:00 pm: the Sister Bridges lighting
- 9:30 pm: the Xfinity Fireworks Spectacular finale
There's also free live music on downtown stages through the evening (with Daya headlining the Xfinity Holiday Jam at Arts Landing), plus the Peoples Gas Holiday Market in the Cultural District.
Wondering where to watch the Light Up Night fireworks from land? The Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership lists Fort Duquesne Boulevard, the 9th Street (Rachel Carson) Bridge and Arts Landing as viewing spots for the 9:30 pm finale.
For the full lineup, stage times, road and transit updates and any last-minute changes, check the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership's official Highmark Light Up Night page and VisitPITTSBURGH's Light Up Night guide.
Gateway Clipper's Light Up Night cruises are our own ticketed events. They aren't part of the official Light Up Night program, and they aren't affiliated with or endorsed by the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership or VisitPITTSBURGH.
Why see Light Up Night from the river?
Light Up Night draws big crowds downtown, and with little ones in tow, that can mean a long night of parking, walking and standing. On the water, it's a different evening:
- Skip the traffic, parking and crowds. You board at Station Square, across the Monongahela from downtown, and let the Duchess do the driving.
- A seat for everyone. Instead of jockeying for a view on a packed sidewalk, the whole family can sit back and take in the dazzling city lights and Pittsburgh's illuminated skyline.
- Warm and comfortable. Like the Empress, Queen and Princess, the Duchess has heated decks, which is nice on a late-November night.
- A new holiday tradition. It's an easy, stress-free way to celebrate the season together, whether it's your first Light Up Night or your thirtieth.
The cruise is all about seeing Pittsburgh light up for the holidays from the best seat in the city, right on the rivers. We can't promise a view of any particular fireworks show, so if fireworks are a must, plan on the downtown viewing spots above or the dinner option below.

Getting to the dock and parking at Station Square
All Gateway Clipper cruises leave from our dock at 350 W. Station Square Drive, on the South Side of the Monongahela, across the river from downtown.
- Parking: Use the Station Square garage or one of the lots around Station Square. For the easiest walk to the dock, choose the garage or the West Carson/River Lot.
- Good to know: All lots and the garage are pay-to-park and cashless (cards accepted at the kiosk). Parking is run by Station Square, not Gateway Clipper, and isn't included in your ticket.
- Arrive early: Boarding starts at 8:00 pm, and boats leave on time and can't come back for late guests. Aim to be at the dock by 8:00 pm.
Directions, parking maps and more answers are on our Plan Your Visit page with Station Square parking info.
Tips for families on Light Up Night
- Book kids' tickets for ages 3–12 at the child price, $26.19.
- Bring a layer. The decks are heated, but it's always a little cooler on the river than on land in November, and you'll want to step out for photos.
- Plan a snack. The snack bar has hot dogs, nachos, popcorn, cotton candy, candy, coffee, hot tea and sodas for purchase. Snack bar prices are plus PA sales tax.
- Leave the cash at home. The boat is cashless: credit/debit cards, Google Pay and Apple Pay are accepted.
- Grab a family photo. Our photo team takes a boarding photo of your group, which you can buy that night or pre-purchase at checkout.
- Make a night of it. It's a late-evening sailing (8:30–10:00 pm), so a nap or a quiet afternoon helps the little ones enjoy every minute.
Adults 21+ with valid photo ID can visit the full-service bar.
Want dinner too? The Light Up Night Dinner Dance Cruise
If you're planning a grown-up night out, the Light Up Night Dinner Dance Cruise is our dinner option for the same evening. It boards at 6:30 pm and sails 7:30–10:00 pm, with a dinner buffet, a DJ and a full-service bar for purchase. In its own words, it offers "unforgettable views of Pittsburgh's illuminated skyline capped off by front row seats to fireworks." Tickets are $157.12 per adult, all-in, and it's recommended for ages 18+.
For families, the Sightseeing Cruise is the easy pick; for a festive dinner and dancing, choose the Dinner Dance Cruise.
