Quick answer

Gateway Clipper hosts winter weddings in Pittsburgh, with the Three Rivers Queen as a favorite from November through March. The Queen holds up to 250 guests for a ceremony and reception, its decks are heated, and winter dates often have more availability than peak-season Saturdays.

Holiday lights on the bridges, the skyline glowing on the water by late afternoon, and everyone you love in one warm room: a winter wedding on Pittsburgh's rivers has a magic all its own. Every November through March, the Three Rivers Queen hosts winter weddings, from the vows to the last dance, and couples who choose the "off" season often find it's the most memorable time of year to say "I do."

Here's what to know if you're dreaming of a winter riverboat wedding in Pittsburgh, plus a first look at something new we're planning for 2027.

Why a winter wedding on the rivers?

Most Pittsburgh couples picture a summer or fall wedding, and that's exactly why winter is worth a look.

  • More dates to choose from. Saturdays from May to October typically book 12 to 18 months out. Winter dates, along with Fridays and Sundays, often have more availability.
  • The city does the decorating. Once the holiday season arrives, downtown is dressed for the holidays, and the skyline and bridges are lit up for your evening on the water.
  • Early sunsets work in your favor. In winter, the city lights come up early in the evening, so your guests get the glittering skyline for much of the celebration, not just the last dance.
  • Cozy, not cold. The Queen has heated decks, so the party stays warm inside while the rivers and bridges slide past the windows.

Meet the Three Rivers Queen

The Three Rivers Queen joined the Gateway Clipper Fleet in 2013. She's a three-deck paddlewheeler that holds up to 250 guests, with climate-controlled decks inside. That gives you room to exchange vows, gather for cocktails, and move on to dinner and dancing, all aboard one boat while the skyline goes by.

Yes, you can have your ceremony on the Queen, too. Say "I do" and celebrate your reception without your guests ever leaving the boat.

You can see the Queen and the rest of our boats on our fleet page, including 3D tours, or browse Gateway Clipper weddings to see how a riverboat wedding day comes together.

Prefer a different boat?

The Queen isn't your only winter option. Our other wedding boats, the Empress (up to 260 guests for dinner), the newly renovated Princess (up to 150) and the Duchess (up to 130), can host winter weddings as well. Our Events Team can walk you through which boat fits your date and guest count.

Planning tips for a winter riverboat wedding

1. Start with your guest count

Your guest count is the first thing our Events Team will ask about, because it tells us which boat and layout will work. If your list is still growing, give us your best range and we'll help from there.

2. Pick a date with the holidays in mind

Some couples love a December wedding with the city's holiday lights as a backdrop. Others prefer January through March, after the holiday rush, when friends and family have more room on their calendars. Either way, reach out early so you have the best choice of dates.

3. Make it easy for out-of-town guests

Winter weather is one more reason to keep travel simple. Your wedding boat can pick guests up and drop them off at docks around the city, not only at our Station Square home, including Point State Park near the downtown and North Shore hotels. Guests can walk from the hotel to the boat: no cabs, parking or shuttles to arrange.

4. Plan your photos around the light

With early winter sunsets, talk to your photographer about timing. Golden-hour portraits happen early in the day in winter, and the lit skyline makes a stunning backdrop for night photos at the rail.

5. Leave the details to the crew

Every Gateway Clipper wedding includes a cruise director, so your family can relax while our crew handles the details. Dinner is prepared by our culinary team and served aboard, and our Events Team will help you plan everything from the menu to the music.

Coming soon: the Gateway Clipper Wedding Collection

Here's a little secret for couples planning ahead: we're putting the finishing touches on our all-new Wedding Collection for 2027, a fresh lineup of wedding packages for celebrating on the rivers.

We're timing the reveal with engagement season, which runs from around Thanksgiving through Valentine's Day. If you're newly engaged (or about to be), keep an eye on our weddings page and the Captain's Log for the first look.

Want to hear about it as soon as it's ready? Request information and let our Events Team know you're interested in a 2027 wedding. A $2,500 deposit holds your date and boat and is applied to your final balance, so you can lock in a date now.

Engaged over the holidays? Start here

The holidays are one of Pittsburgh's favorite times to pop the question. If you're planning a proposal, a cruise with the city lights all around makes a pretty unforgettable setting:

  • Light Up Night Dinner Dance Cruise on Saturday, November 21, 2026, sailing on four boats, including the Three Rivers Queen, with dinner on the water and a view of the fireworks.
  • Valentine's Dinner Cruise on Friday, February 12 and Saturday, February 13, 2027 (the Saturday sailing includes the Three Rivers Queen).

And if the answer is yes, you'll already know the boat.

Let's find your winter date

A winter wedding on the Three Rivers Queen brings together everything we love about Pittsburgh: the rivers, the bridges, the skyline and a family business that has been celebrating with this city since 1958.
